I'm an MTB rider but have wanted to get back into BMX. Recently got this GT for free that has been sitting in storage. Is this worth sprucing up and riding? Seems like an early 2000s GT performer. Has Alex rims. Original tires with low wear (I would probably still have to replace them though right? Since they're probably 20+ years old?). If it is worth keeping what should I replace/ lube etc? Thanks!!!

    early 2000’s GT Compe.
Midschool bikes are cool. I’d imagine its probably a decent riding bike but probably a little heavy by todays standards. See what its worth to the collectors before you do much with it. I don’t know much about values on old stuff but it may be worth checking out.
Otherwise if you like it ride it. Looks like a lower spec’d model with those 1 piece cranks, though.

  2. It was free so there’s that.
That’s a 1 piece crank, which probably won’t hold up to much abuse from an adult riding it.
Is it worth it to add parts here and there? That’s up to you and how much you like riding it.
Complete bikes have become really dialed in the past few decades, so you could otherwise pick up a new bike for a few hundred if you choose to.

  3. Think I’ll probably try to sell it and put it towards a nicer bike. Also wanna get one for my wife. Part of me was thinking of fixing it up as wife’s bike, but I think newer will be better.

  4. No. Definitely not if you intend to actually ride it and jump/learn stunts. This was a lower quality bike back when it was made.
Virtually any modern low end complete bike will be far better. And for what those go for new, you can get something much nicer used with quality parts from reputable brands.
