Hey everyone,
Just noticed this scratch on my Canyon Aeroad frame, likely caused by unclipping or repeated contact from my shoe (see attached pics).
It looks superficial, but with carbon frames, it's hard to be sure. Has anyone had similar wear or scratching from unclipping? Did you do anything to protect it, repair it, or just leave it?
Would appreciate any tips on:
- How to prevent it going forward
- Whether it’s worth touching up
- If I should be concerned structurally
Thanks in advance!

If it is from your shoes. Maybe a clip with less float, should be from unclipping as you would be twisting your ankle out.
Edit: that is cosmetic nothing structural
Edit 2: you have wear on your crank also. You would have to feel that while pedalling, do you notice your heal and tow hitting?
Yes, same in my Ultimate, I put clear protective film on the area to protect it. Superficial scuffs, it would be very difficulty to cause structural damage from uncilpping.
Do you unclip by moving your heel inwards or something? Most people unclip by moving their heel outwards.
I have never seen sth like this. Turn your heel to the outside while also twisting it. By this you won’t need to turn as much.
Learn to unclip by pivoting your heel outwards instead of inwards. As someone already mentioned, pivoting inwards will screw you up one day when your foot hits the frame before the clip disengages when you’re unclipping in an emergency.
You’re also rubbing the crank arm and your chainstay with your heel, you might want to do some work on your pedal stroke and some workouts to strengthen your ankles so you can keep them straight and avoid wearing through your shoes and your paint.
This is odd you have cosmetic wear on your chain stay, your down tube, and the inside of your crank. You could be causing the chain stay damage if you have excessive float in your pedals but I don’t see how you could cause that kind of damage to the stay and crank.
