  1. Why? Used frames are cheap.

You could clean off the rust and repaint, but I don’t see the point.

  2. Depends on the value or sentiment of the frame. There’s some solutions to keep rust at bay and keep you riding. If it’s deeper than just the surface, that would be bad though

I would not ride that, looks like it could be corroding from the inside out. The benefit is not worth the risk.

That’s a hole in the middle eh? I’m not an expert but this would definitely play on my mind for sure.

It’s basically shot. When that fails the back end will most likely get wobbly,

Coated in rust protection? Seems like an incomplete or ineffective treatment.

Looks like it’s rusting from the inside out in a fairly critical location. Given the hole, this seems like a real risk pretty soon. Maybe okay tomorrow, but how many more tomorrows? Start seeking a replacement now, replace soon!

  7. I ride a lot of questionable stuff harder than I should through traffic. I would not ride that.

I would definitely tap on it prety hard to figure out how deep that rust is, how big the hole is. Probably time to let it go though.

  9. Yeah looks like a hole. The spiderweb-like pattern is pretty typical of clear coat raw steel frames, and is usually only superficial… That hole though indicates there’s much deeper corrosion likely from the inside.

The only “upside” is that this is the rear, so if the area fails at least that’s not going to send you over the bars to meet concrete with your teeth.

Nah, since it almost looks to have come from the inside enough to actually eat through the frame, I can’t say I would. Strange that enough moisture would make its way in there continuously to do that. Is there a vent hole higher up on the stay but not down at the dropout?

I would ride it at 20kph to the corner store. Wouldn’t trust it at speed or for a tour.

  12. You can tap it with a punch to see how big the hole is. If it goes through, that tube probably needs to be replaced. If it doesn’t you can probably have someone fill the dented hole with bronze braze and get it repainted again. You need to stop rust inside, use a rust inhibitor, then fluid film or frame saver to coat the inside of the tubes. Do you hang this bike, because don’t do it, it doesn’t seem to have a weep holes near the drop out (or they were covered by this new coating you mentioned) for water to escape.

Thats done. If its a sentimental value bike, have it repaired. But as it is in the pic…its junk

Nope, looks like it’s corroding inside out. My guess is that frame had water in it for a good long while.

If i didn’t have a car i would ride it one last time to my local Framebuilder to have them fix it. Anything past that, no
