Nice only works if you want to focus on the villages and tiny cities around Nice and Monaco. But Toulon is a better base choice if you want to explore the entire South East. For the entire South ( "Mediterranean South"), Marseille is the best choice to pick as a base.
Nice is NOT abordable at all. Nice is not even à nice place to live. What is ot with everyone going there lately ? Now I understand why I have NON BUYING people enrering the shop filming and just leaving without even saying a Word to me. Nice is an awefull town full of close minded entiteled people. So please if you come to Nice please dont be like the citizen already there and try to visit small places like Pasteur or les moulins to understand you are being fooled.
Many years ago friends and I visited Nice. We bought T-shirts that simply said "Nice" on the front as souvenirs.
Wearing those T-shirts in the US took on a different meaning when worn by the more buxom women of the group. We had not been paying attention to how that was pronounced in English…
Carrying that 55 pound suitcase is the real problem. If you just bring a backpack you can change hotels every day or two no problem. And you won’t be limited to the towns you can get to that are around Nice. And a rental car is not necessary, much in the same way a trip to the south of France is not necessary. But it does give you a lot of freedom to go and fo what you want, much like a trip to the south of France.
