The 108th edition of the Geodalia got underway today in Albania. The first time this country has ever hosted the Jirro ditalia and with a testing stage at that from Dur the second biggest city in Albania to a finish in the capital city Tana with a few complications on the way. Tom Pitcock, Kagan Benal, Antonio Tibeti, among a number of star riders making their way to Albania, including Watt Vanart, one of the favorites for the stage, along with Paul Manet and a bunch of other fast men who might fancy their chances. Primos Roglitch and Jai Hindley for Red Bull Bora Hans are one of five riders in the Pelaton to have won the Geodalia in past editions. They rolled out of Dures and out onto the 160 km stage 1 course. Took a while for the attacks to go, but after 5 km a breakaway group of five riders had formed, including Aleandro Ver Silvan Mon, Taco Vander Horn, Aleandro Tonelli, and Manueli Taroti of VF group Barani. Combination of three different teams controlling the breakaway. They went through the first intermediate sprint of the day with Aleandro Tonelli on the front for PY visit Malta. And then shortly after that it was the second intermediate sprint and this time Manueli Tarotzi of VF group Barani took the maximum amount of points onto the big category 2 climb of Gratzen. And behind in the Pelaton, Hana Yuzo, the victim of an innocuous looking crash and chasing back on as they wound their way up the 13 km climb, holding the breakaway at a tight distance couple of kilometers from the top. Then it was Aleandra Tonelli who attacked to try and go clear. He was caught though and pegged back. And in the end, Silvan Monique of Coffidus, the Belgian climber, had enough in the locker to win the big climb of the day and to take 18 points and a firm grip on the King of the Mountains competition. On the long descent, then Aleandra Vetti of Arca BNB opened up a gap on the other riders from the original breakaway, but he was eventually joined by them as they lined themselves up on the flatter roads and the approach to the Red Bull Colometer. An innovation at the Jirro ditalia with six bonus seconds, four and two respectively for the first three riders over the line. And it was Taroti who picked up the six bonus seconds ahead of Tanelli. Then with 40 km to go, the remains of the breakaway was swept up as they headed towards the first of two ascents of the category 3 Surell climb. A testing climb of some 7 km. Over the top of that, they’d already thinned the group down as they passed through the finish line and back out onto the circuit one more time for the final ascent of the Surell climb. Little lead riding for Mads Pedison firmly in control of the bunch. Then Israel Premier decided to take it up with Nick Schulz. In the meantime, some of the sprinters including Kaden Groves was dropped. Rat Van looking very vulnerable close to the top but somehow fighting his way back to regain his position in the bunch. Julio Chicone took Mads Pedison and Matias Vachk of lead over the top of the climb and down into the descent in a much diminished group that was no bigger than about 30 35 riders at this point including Watt Venard and Mads Pedest keeping the pace high on the descent. A horrible crash then a few riders brought down but none worse than Mikander of Sudal Quickstep who suffered horrible injuries and was sadly stretched away and off the race seeking medical attention. And Vanard stuck to the wheel of Maz Pedison. A brilliant lead out from Matias Vach. And now he opens up his sprint. Now Maz Pedison goes Vanard fighting for room on the barriers down the middle though. A an attack from Antimar Shay wants but it’s Pison who’s going to hold off Vanard. Is he Fernard runs in mighty close but Pison holds off the challenge of wild fan arts. Celebrations all run from little trek. He made his way to the podium to pull on the Malor Roa as winner of stage one ahead of Wat Vanart and Oluis Allah in third place. Amalia Roza then defendable probably for Maz Pison tomorrow in the individual time trial and he also leads after one stage the Malia Chiclamino competition ahead of Wanat Sa Mon had enough points to hold off the challenge of Lorenzo Fortunato. He’s the king of the mountains. And Franchesco Pusato with his fourth place finish is the first white jersey of this year’s Gro.
