Greater Manchester is boosting School Streets to 60 next year, aiming for 100 by 2028 – making school journeys safer and healthier.

Backed by £1.3m in funding, this is part of a major push to get more children walking, wheeling and cycling to school.

I’m really pleased to announce that we’ve allocated 1.3 million pounds to expand the school streets program. The region is on track to deliver 60 school streets in the next year, which is a great start on the target of reaching 100 by 2028. So, what is a school street? Well, it’s a street where measures are in place to reduce the amount of vehicle traffic on that street at drop off and pickup times for the school. Makes it safer for pupils to arrive at and leave school. and it’s similar to measures that you might see in place at big sporting events or concerts. The benefits are farreaching and today we heard from pupils from Seymour Park Primary School in Trafford. My favorite thing about School Street is how so many people like going on their bikes and scooters or just walking to school and having fun. like people that are working on school streets to know that other schools should also enjoy the pleasure of not having cars beside you all the time. First thing I would say is it works. It makes a difference. It is transformative and it really has made a huge difference to us at Seymour Park. I’m really excited to continue working with TFGM and the local authority partners to make it possible for more children to walk, wheel, cycle, and scoot to their school.
