I had some cheap Vittoria Zaffiro Pro tires, 28mm width (regular / with tubes), which I replaced with Schwalbe One Performance tubeless, also 28mm, and the difference was significant (tubeless were even on lower pressure than calculated). This was at the limit with the clearance, which was OK when dry, but as soon as a wet patch comes, the particles get on the tire and start scratching the fork. Absolutely no such issues with Vittoria's. Otherwise, I enjoyed the comfort of it since the roads here are not so good. I'm not sure if the puncture protection can add so much volume, or if this is because tubeless tires are larger, or manufacturers have their tendency to be fatter/slimmer…
Did anyone experience something similar? Could GP5000S be slimmer than the Schwalbe of the same 28mm width?

  1. Yes, it’s common for the printed size to be the same but for the actual MEASURED size to be different between brands. Sometimes even between different models within the same brand, but that is rare and shouldn’t happen.

It’s like shoes – one company’s size 10 may be different than another company’s size 10

Tire width not only differs between manufacturers but also depends on your rims. Primarily rim width but a slightly different rim profile can also mean different tire widths with the same rim widths.

Yes for various reasons including making your tyre weigh less than one from another company that claims to be the same size

  5. I really much like the Hutchinson tyres on my daily commuting racer 700c. Confy, solid, hardly ever had a puncher. About 1h30 a day in dirty, scruffy wet london

Definitely, there are whole websites dedicated to this stuff.

  7. Unfortunately yes.

One of my bikes is an original Dogma F if I use Vittoria tyres I can get 28mm in but Continental 25’s are pushing it and Schwalbe 25’s are a no go.

it depends mostly on what inner rim width the tires were manufactured for. some were still on 17c rims, oders already on 23c rims. in my experience, every additional mm in rim width (to the width they were specified for) translates roughly to 0.3mm in additional width to the tire.

yes there is a lot of variety between the listed width of different tires from different brands. One company’s 28 may equal another company’s 25 and yet another company’s 30.

  10. Some Schwalbe and Conti tires will even have a different width molded into the rubber than what’s printed on the tire.
