Hola. It’s my last day in Spain and today I’m joining the group for a recovery pace ride hopefully. Although David has treated us to a pesky little climb at the end of today. So, it’s 42 miles and at the end we have a rather steep climb apparently. But he did say the views are worth it. So, I’m hoping he’s not lying to me and my legs can get me up there. But actually, I’m not feeling too bad. If I had to do another 200k today, I would, which is a good sign for to France. But tomorrow I go home, so it’s going to be nice to have some company today. I thought I’d wear my bright colors to end with a bang as well. Nigel, how you feeling about today’s rides? Feeling fantastic, thank you. And it’s nice you’re able to join us. So, uh, top of the hill dance ready. Top of the hill dance. I’ve been practicing it all night, actually. So, it should be very good. Lovely. Um, I can help us all. I think we should do it at the top of the big climb at the end. Are you coming up there? I hope so. Great. Cuz that’s David did say it’s optional that that climb. So, some of us Well, I think I’ve got to do it. Can you help me? Yeah, I will. You can tie rope to me if Although I I don’t know after after this week I might not be too much help, but you know, we can stop and we’re not going to be missed with that top. No, you’re going to see me coming today. It’s a nice steady recovery ride for me. My Garmin was actually suggesting that I do a 3-hour base ride with 110 watts average. Well, I’m currently twostling along to 100 watts. So, perfect. Really, should my legs should actually feel better for doing a nice steady ride. And although I do find it hard to ride slower, it’s good for me to do it and it’s nice to have company. So yeah, I’m a bit sad to be going home tomorrow, actually. But I’m really excited to see Kyle and Chester cuz I’ve missed them. A pine cone. Hola. Hey, riding through the vineyards now. It’s beautiful. I can’t believe I’ve been here for like 8 days. It’s gone so quick and I’ve learned so much to take home with me for my tour to France prep. And yeah, it’s just been great really. Tada. Oh, this is the life. We’ve got a bit of a headwind, but it means we’ll have a really nice tailwind on the way back. Right, we’re almost halfway through. We got a lovely little cafe stop. I’m having a banana out my back pocket, but everyone else having a cafe called Lechro, I think. Yeah. And a banana on a sandwich. Damn sandwich. Ride fuel going in. It’s very noisy. Very excited Spanish men in there. I’m not sure what they’re doing, but are you feeling ready for the little dance? Absolutely. Getting ready for it. David, are you ready? I’ll be there in spirit. Rolling on the Spanish roads again. It’s Kyle. I love all the poppies. Yeah, so pretty. They’ve been amazing this year. I can’t remember them being so good. Really? There’s not normally that many. No, it’s different things each year. Yeah. So, we’re now coming up to a big yippy, aka a big downhill, and then we’ve got the challenging climb of the day, which to be honest, my legs don’t feel ready for, but I’m ready in spirit and I’ll give it a go. And if I have to have a few stops on the way up, I will. But my motivation, get up there, top of the hill dance, and then freewheel back down again. But yeah, and part of me is like, I don’t really want to go up there cuz I just feel really tired. But then I’m like, if I don’t, I’ll regret it. And Nigel said he’s going to go up, so I can’t let him go up there on his own. I love this one. Right, so we just come down a big climb. Vivian’s decided not the big No, just sorry. We’ve just come down a big descent, not a big climb. Vivian’s taking the sensible option of not going up the big climb, but this is what we’ve got coming up. So, it’s 3.85 mi long, 1,299 ft. Basically a killer. I’m just waiting for Nigel and David. They’re coming down and then we’ll tackle it. But I am feeling a bit I’m not looking forward to it. I’ll put it that way. But I am motivated by top of the hill dance. It’s just not nice when you see that color. You hear the red color. You just think, “Oh, no.” Right. Then it’s time to face the big bad boy. This is not my idea of recovery. Can I just say this is David’s idea. This is the last point at which you can choose to go to the ice cream shop instead of the climb. Should we? Famous last words. What are we thinking? I’ve been bullied into doing this. No one has to do it if you don’t want to. No, I’m looking forward to it. If David said he was if Nigel said let’s not do it, I’d be totally up for that. But Nigel, you not taking responsibility. Yeah, it’s your fault, Nigel. This is not recovery. I’m just thinking about the dance. You know where to go from? Yes. Thinking about the dance. Yeah. Follow straight over this roundabout. Yeah. Down through the street, over to the bridge, right at the bridge, and then underneath. Yeah. I’m just thinking about my sanity right now. What time? I’ll just send you a message when I’ve got that. Nigel, I think we need to do this. Okay, let’s go. So, this is a climb that definitely gets steeper towards the end. I’ve got 2 miles to go and 1,000 ft to climb. See you up there. It’s a burner. Keeping on spinning. I can and I will. Got a feeling there’s going to be a really good view at the top though. always motivates me. One mile to go, 582 ft to climb. It’s going to get steep. Probably won’t be able to film the last bit cuz I’ll just be focusing on breathing. So, I’ll see you when I get to the top. Gee whiz. I’m guessing that that up there is where I’m going. Jeez. 0.7 miles to go. Keep on spinning. Spinning is winning. That’s where I’m heading. Nearly there. 0.3 miles to go. Hey, I made it. Thank goodness for that. That was not an easy climb, but the view is definitely worth it. Stunning. Penn is shining. She’s not happy about the amount of climbs we’ve done. I’m going to go down here actually and see if I can cheer on um Nig’s coming up. Not called him before. I think he prefers Nigel actually, but I’ll go and see. There’s honestly just no better feeling than when you get to the top of a climb and you know it’s like the hardest bit done. It’s so beautiful up here. Pennies up there, which is all right. There’s no one around. Look at this. These are all the climbs, I think. Oh, I can hear voice. There they are. They’re over there in the distance. this bit here. It doesn’t look hard on the camera, but that was steep from up there. So, I’ll give them a cheer when they get a bit closer. But for now, I’m just going to enjoy this bit of peace. Lovely. This bit’s the worst bit, honestly. You think, oh, you look at that and you think, oh god. You think I’ve done enough already at this point. Get me to the top. It’s funny what goes through your mind when you’re going up a climb. Like sometimes it depends what mood you’re in. But before the climb, I was thinking hell to the no. Once I was on it, I got into the flow and I felt all right. But it wasn’t easy. It’s definitely worth it though. This isn’t This is so nice. There’s even little picnic benches up there. Should water back up with me? Here they come. Go on, Nigel. Last push. Nearly there. Yahoo! Smile for the camera. They’re probably thinking, “Amy, pee off.” Pedestal word off. Yeah, it was good. Well done, mate. Thank you. Well done. I’m getting some photos for you. Getting your best angles. Top of the hill dance is waiting for you. Let’s go around. See them when they come up quick. Oh no, I’m not going fast enough now. Oh jeez, I can’t run in cleats. Can you get out this way? Oh jeez, it’s easy on this gravel. Oh, they’ll be so happy when they get up here. It’s such a relief when you get to the top. Honestly, you just think hala to the lua. Oh, I’ve got a fly bite on my ankle. It’s not nice. Yay. Well done. That was a burner. That was not a pure cadence. Yeah. as well. Well done. Are you glad you did that? Cuz I actually Yeah, it was actually all right, wasn’t it? Spectacular view. Really? It’s worth it up here. Honestly, it’s so nice. That last bit I thought, “Oh, no. Yeah, that last bit’s the hardest.” Yeah. Right. Well, seeing as we’re at the highest point of today in the steepest climb, it’s time for the top of the hill dance. Now, because there only three of us, David’s managed to weedle his way out of it cuz he’s going to be the cameraman. So me and Nigel will give it a go. No, you can use that. Fine. Are we ready? Although actually, how do you do it in Spanish? Do t dos uno. Do uno and flip. Hey, that was much better than the You did well. I’m proud of that. I’m very proud. Thank you, boss. Right, it’s time to descend on down and have a nice yippy. Nigel’s going ahead so he can take some photos of us coming down and yeah, going to enjoy it. But we’re going to be careful, aren’t we, David? Cuz it’s steep and narrow uh with drop offs on some of the corners. It’s the end of the day and there’s a couple of uh traffic calming measures. So, it’s Yeah, it’s one to go slowly on on a road bike. Yeah, definitely certainly the first time. I’m a slow descender anyway, so don’t worry. I’ll be taking it steady. Wow. Wow. So pretty. I think sometimes it’s the idea of the climb that’s worse than the actual climb. And if you’ve got a motivation, like a good view or a descent afterwards, then that can get you up there. But now it’s time to yippy down. We’re nearly back. And I think I’ll get a sandwich cuz I’m a little bit hungry. One last burner to finish us off and then I’m going to dive head first into a sandwich. Right. Well, that’s my ride. Ding, dang, Don. Steps for you. We did 46.19 mi. We went up 3,753 ft. And my bum was in the saddle. 3 hours 33 minutes and 36 seconds. And my average speed was 13 mph. So, a nice steady recovery ride. My watts were quite low actually, only 107 watts. That’s perfect recovery. Definitely put more Wats in going up that climb at the end. But what I’m going to put Watson into now is eating this bad boy because Oh yeah, Buckadadillo, I’m ready for you. It’s always great coming back from a ride to a nice Oh, it’s warm as well. Oh yes, crunchy apple. Anyway, I’m going to enjoy this now. Pack my bike up. I’ll probably end this video tomorrow with Kyle cuz he’s picking up from the station. You all right, Nigel? Very good. Yes. Persuaded me to go up to the I think you persuaded me. Actually, if you’d said, “Oh, no. I’m not bothered.” I wouldn’t have done it. So, I’m really glad that you said Yeah. It’s worth the effort. Yeah, definitely worth the effort. Yeah. Right. Well, I’ve packed my bike away. I’ve gained a few uh cuts on the way. I don’t know how I’ve managed that. But, it’s a really easy bike box because literally it goes on this kind of rack thing at the bottom. So, you just have to take your wheels off, put them in the wheel bags, slot your bike in, strap it in, and then that’s all you have to take off is the wheels. So, it’s quite nice. And you just zip the bad boy up. And then also, I never used to do this, but now that I’m been abroad a few times cycling, I’m not scared to put dirty kit, nutrition, anything extra in my bike box, to be honest. As long as you’re under the weight, it’s fine. So, I’ve got my helmet, my shoes, bag of dirty kit, leftover snacks. Yeah, could fit some more stuff down there, but I won’t take the Michael. Oh, and then this bit kind of protects against that. So, that straps onto there and stops if there’s any bumps. This bit protects it as well. So, it’s a really good box. Um, I did get given it and Kyle’s very jealous of it. So, because Kyle has to take his handlebars and his pedals off, so he’s always a little bit jealous. Oh, and I always put my shoes at the front just to bit of extra protection for the forks. Zip the bad boy up and we’re ding dang. Right. I’m back in the UK. I’m not in my house. I’m in my garage that Kyle has been working on while I’ve been away. Look at this. It’s great. Every night. This going to be the gym. And I’m going to paint it, aren’t I? I’m very happy. I’ve come home for a happy wife. I mean, nice clean gym. I come home and I’m a happy wife. Floor’s going to have rubber rubber floor down. Oh, yeah. We need to do that. Yeah, that’s that’s your job for you cuz you said you were going to do that. Well, I’m going to lay the floor in the rubber stuff. You just sit it down. Okay, I think I can cope with that. Well, you said you were going to order it for Oh, you meant to do that after the skirting boards. Before the matter. Anyway, I’m halfway through a cruncher. I’ve been missing the jazz apples. I’ve got to tell you that. The Spanish app is just not the same as here. I mean, these probably aren’t from the UK, but they taste good. Anyway, Chessa’s here, too. Chessy B. Say mommy. Come here. Say hello. Have you enjoyed me being away from you? Yeah, I’ve not really had a minute to I think I missed you to be honest. I missed you a lot. But yeah, we’ll talk about more about that. We have missed each other, aren’t we? What do I just do then when we talk about mother? I’ve got no energy. I’m so tired from the flight. I was going to say we’ll talk about that on the podcast, but it kind of came out like I took a weird thing. Do you hear what I just did? We got to get to Super. We got to go to supermarket cuz it’s Sunday and also we want to sneak up with farm there. Kyle’s not got bread and he also forgot the one thing I asked him to buy from the shopping list. Plenish almond milk. I did get almond milk. It’s the only almond milk doesn’t have a load of artificial rubbish in. And I came home. He got me the artificial one. I said, “Kyle, we’re going back to the shop.” Smooth as a baby’s bum, man. Look at it. Perfectly. It is really good. Very good. Feel that. It’s impressive. I can reach up there. So smooth. You can smooth. Oh, no. I got that on it. Literally. That’s apple juice. It doesn’t matter. You’re painting that. I know I am. Anyway, thank you so much for watching. Spain’s been amazing. I’m very tired now. The plan is to have a recovery week so the cod loins can get the most out of the miles. And then next thing we’ve got coming up is Scotland. Scotland. We’re going to Scotland for a tap Calonia. And then instead of getting the train back, we’re getting the train there. We’re going to ride back to 600k cuz why the hell not? So yeah, thank you so much for watching. Thanks Escapar CC for having me. TT to the FN. Goodbye. K. Is there anything you like to add? Uh, no. It was good to have new wife back. Keeps me on the straight and down. Yeah, you’re there. Not to food again. You just kept me busy working, didn’t you? Really? What have you been eating while away? All the stuff you bought me. I did have to buy an extra pizza. Did you work day one? I’m not cooking anything substantial tonight. Now, so I can cook for you. Been a busy boy. You do the washing up. Can you see how busy I’ve been? I found I’m very impressed. Right. Next. So, next job is paint this thing. And then we’re going to have the TV there and the bike here. So there the turbo and then maybe a little squat rack here. So a lot of work still to be done, but it’s getting we’re getting progress and I’m happy about it. Perfect. Anyway, I’m waffling. Goodbye. Goodbye. No, do it nicely. Goodbye.

  1. I have read that the pro’s don’t part with their cycling shoes. They say that bikes are replaceable before a race but broken in shoes are irreplaceable??

  2. Would you consider using even lower gearing for the TDF challenge? You may need to replace your cassette & chainrings by then, due to all the training miles.

  3. Yay;it’s time for coffee with Amy; Amy, you’re a rockstar! I always looked at hills as little fitness tests, albeit some are longer than others and, some are soul crushers. when I first started mountain biking with my team there was a long climb up logging roads to get to the good single track and I was always the last one up on my 40 pound all mountain bike. My friends were always encouraging but still it always sucked, and then one day, suddenly I was the first one up the hill so everyone goated me in to joining them on the traditional start to the road season, Seattle’s famous “chilly hilly; a 33 mile romp with 2,173 vertical in freezing temps and every hill was a short soul crusher and I was last again! Well at some point I began to actively start seeking out hills, the steeper the better but I was racing myself to shave minutes of course off of my time. They still sucked but I could measure my performance over time. Well don’t tell anyone Amy but, you’re smiling while you’re climbing and have clearly graduated to hill seeker! Unfortunately for me when i moved to New Mexico i learned I still sucked on hills but because I now lived at 5,800 feet elevation and had 100 degree plus heat to acclimate too:-( PS, I’m good at making excuses when my performance sucks! You on the other hand definitely do not suck, you rock! Thanks for letting me join you in Spain.
