Two motorcycle racers have died after a crash involving 11 bikes during a British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
Owen Jenner, 21, and 29-year-old Shane Richardson both died from severe injuries after a crash on the first lap as riders exited turn one. A third man, 47-year-old Tom Tunstall, is being treated for “significant back and abdominal injuries” at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Yes, indeed. So, this is the British Super Sport Championship, which for um people who aren’t necessarily fans of bike racing is essentially the the second division of superbike racing here in Britain, but very very passionately followed, well attended, and tragedy really has struck. Um, as you can see on screen there, two riders tragically lost their lives in a crash at the first corner of the first lap at a race in Cheshure. Um they were Owen Jenner who’s tw and Shane Richardson who’s 29 and both of them lost their lives in what’s been described as a chain reaction incident. Now not many details other than that given by the organizers but I think you can imagine what it means. It was probably one or two bikes coming together or slipping and then that cascades through the entire field. In total there were 11 bikes involved in the accident. One other rider, 47y old Tom Tonsl, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. We’re waiting an update on his condition. Then five other riders were uh treated on site by paramedics with more minor injuries. Um the event was clearly stopped for the treatment, but then also completely cancelled as well. And there’s a multi-ter investigation now taking place. The sports governing bodies are investigating, the coroner as well, and Cheshure police uh all investigating the incident. And as I say, look, obviously motorbike racing is thought to be one of the most dangerous motor sport pursuits. That doesn’t mean that it’s um not there aren’t things that could be learned from this. Um and so that will presumably be the things factoring into those multi-tered investigations whether or not there was anything that could be changed. Um it is a tragedy. Even if it is recognized that it’s a dangerous sport, it doesn’t make um you know events like these anymore easy to bear, shall we say. Matthew Thompson, thanks so much. Much appreciated.
