I was working as a marshal at a local cross-country race, mostly gravel with some nasty rocks thrown in. About 30 km total. Someone handed me a full saddle + seatpost that locals had found along the trail.

Later, a rider came through my checkpoint — no saddle. Turns out the clamp broke and the whole thing ejected. He decided not to bother fixing it and just kept going.

He rode 25 km on rough terrain without a saddle, just powering through it. That’s some true grit, right there

  1. I’ve snapped a seat post clamp before. Had to ride home ~8 miles, standing. Def a different kind of workout. That’s the last time I bought a weight weenie seat post clamp 🤣 learned my lesson

I hope you gave him a dressing-down at least for leaving his saddle and post for someone else to pick up. Unacceptable!

  3. I was doing a mountain bike race and between dodging all the lost water bottles I was surprised to see a saddle. I got the first aid station and a volunteer was taking the saddle off their own bike to give the racer.

I had a friend get a fistula in his ass (trust me, its bad, don’t google it) and if you don’t know, its *extremely* painful. The dude road a bike for over a year without a saddle, commuting to and from work as well as just going on pleasure rides.

A fella on one of our group rides had a saddle with CF rails on his MTB, and at about 10 miles to go the rails snapped. He simply rode out of the saddle like it was nothing. My legs would’ve burned holes in my trousers.

  6. Years ago I busted a seat while out on a ride and had to ride probably 15kms home without it. Would not recommend.

We often do some friendly challenges with each other one is full lap of favourite single track race course 7km. Off the saddle! It hurts like hell if you can do it. I’m using done at 3/4.

The other is each pick one gear for other riders. That’s the only gear they get. $1/ shift if we catch you using others.
