What is, if such a thing even exists, the best bike lock for bikepacking? The most compact, lightweight, and reliable lock. Something that would let me lock the bike for 5 minutes while I run into a shop, hotel, etc. during a trip.

Hiplok Z Lock Combo is my ‘seems like a non-sketchy place and I’ll just be 2 minutes’ lock. Light and small enough that it’s no hassle to carry and a visual deterrent but a determined thief would make short work of it.
Dirty clothes we “washed” in a river that’s just drying on the bike has always protected mine.
None. Maybe just pop an Airtag on the bike, call it good.
I’ve got an aluminum u-lock I’ll take touring that I’ll use when locking up at grocery stores etc. It isn’t actually secure but looks like it is which I think is 90% of what you want.
Made a cable lock out of 1/4in steel cable with crimps on the loops and used a tiny suitcase lock. Enough length to secure the front wheel to the frame. Put the tent stake tab through the rim / spokes on the rear wheel at night while camping.
A friend
Remove the through axle but leave the wheel in so it looks like it’s working. Bike is at least unrideable, and hopefully the thief will hurt themselves thereby warning you.
I use a €5 cable lock
Do some voodoo magic over the bike each time you leave it, leave a chicken sacrifice. But really you can get Garmin navigationa that will Bluetooth your phone (assuming you’re in a small shop) if the bike has someone trying to move it. With a small lock and a large cargo they won’t get to far. They would more likely open your panniers..mine actually have a cheap lock that slots through my bags where they clip together in a way it’s actually secure.. You can also get an additional motion sensor. Similar to what motorcycles attach to their front wheel and handle bar. It alarms when moved. Get a good one though as the wind can set some off causing concern for no reason.
I’ve got the Abus with 3 numbers that go from 0 to 8.
These locks are just dissuasive though. I used that model last year to secure my bike in my courtyard thinking I’d go down again during the evening and bring it up to my flat. I forgot to do that and someone broke the lock and stole the bike. Probably just by putting their foot on the chain to pry it open.
lol so many stupid answers in here!
rockbros has got some decent lighweight locks, albeit they market them for helmets and stuff (like hiplock) but i use them for bikepacking.
