I recently purchased an old road bike. It had a puncture today and am struggling to get the front wheel off. The nut is just too tight. I tried both sides. Am I doing something wrong? I'm using a plier by the way, i don't have a wrench that fits.

Try to get more leverage on it. I have a nice big adjustable wrench for this.
You need a 15mm box wrench to remove. Can also use an adjustable.
Continued use of pliers can strip the bolt and make it even more of a pain to remove.
Get the proper sized 15mm wrench. Right tools for the right jobs.
