I mean, it’s a clearly conflicted setup! I would worry a little about that rear wheel personally – What’s the weight of the peli?

Someone is definitely not going off road, good look and smooth tarmac!

damn thats wild lmao. never seen a bike that aero for bikebacking. i always wondered how confidently one can pack this amount if stuff around narrow carbon structures. i guess that much. im interested in how it goes! whats your tire width and gear range for this adventure? i would not want to be swinging my way up a hill out if the seet and sude to side with this torque on wheels and frame…hope it goes well!

Damn, the center of gravity is so high up, you’re gonna have a tiring time with long, bumpy distances. Your aero, drag is also gonna be bad, top speed is gonna be affected.

  5. The aero frame and wheels make the equipment case look even more massive than it is 😀

  6. I hope you won’t find any steep climbs, or else you will be doing backflips with all that load on your back

Get the widest tires you can fit in the frame and look at getting a bigger cassette, maybe with a road link, or get smaller chainrings. Otherwise the climbs will kill you.

  8. Man, you’re crazy 🙂
But I like it. Please make a movie about that trip.
What’s the rack? I have a canyon grail without any rack mount, but I wish to have it, instead of pure bike packing.

Ditch the case or grab a trailer. Check out Cyclingabout as Alee used a road bike & trailer while in japan.

The good news is you aren’t going until fall. That should give you plenty of time to test your setup. By fall you’ll be a pro I’m sure.

Is that frame capable of doing what you’re intending with that amount of load?

I think there are better bikes for the job.

  12. That case…  Do you really need it?

I’ve done the length of Japan on a road bike (Canyon Ultimate) because it was the one bike I had.  Works fine.  But why would you need so much storage?  Dump the big case and maybe go for a saddle bag, if you really want to overpack.

  13. I have tailfin panniers, and I could take my laptop safely. Fell over a couple of times and if you put the laptop close to the wheel it rarely gets much pressure on it. The camera lens is maybe a bit more sensitive but I’d probably wrap some clothes around it. You’re 100% going to loathe the awesome looking crate after 100k

Ditch the laptop and pelican case. You dont need that lol. If you need it for work, Id get a small tablet and sleeve for it.

  15. Hells yeah man. Remember people on this sub obsess for hours and hours over the perfect bikepacking set-up. Yours may not be perfect, but it is more than adequate (assuming you’re reasonably fit)! People have done more with worse.

  16. Do you really need to carry that much? It’s easy to overpack, and in my experience the more minimal you are the more pleasant the bike packing experience is.

  17. what rack are you using? never thought about putting a pelli on the bike. pretty sure your gear in there is as safe as it gets
