  1. this is fine. the only way you could get more purchase would be to move the axle all the way to the very back but it’s not necessary. one thing i don’t like is how the paint is chewed up from the nut, that can lead to a weak connection. try it out, might not be a big deal. but if your wheel slips, that’s more likely the cause than the wheel not being far enough back. sand or file the drops to a smoother, more even surface. you could add an axle washer or switch to a nut with a captured washer as well.

    this is fine and expected since the derailleur is mounted to a plate on the drive side. basically, get the drive side fully tight and then align the wheel (centered between your stays around the tire) and tighten the non-drive side pictured. it can definitely be worthwhile using an axle nut washer to avoid chewing the paint (clearcoat?) off your frame when you tighten this nut!
