I want to choose between the ozark trail ridge from Walmart and the Schwinn Ascension from target. I want to use this to pedal up hills (pavement) and go fast on roads, but also to try and start some trail riding for the first time. They are both really cheap, I want to get the one that is just better in general.

ozark trail is better but at 400 you could get a decent used hybrid or mountain bike from trek, giant, specialized, fuji or cannondale
I would be hesitant to recommend them to someone who doesn’t have access to tools since it will be assembled pretty poorly. I used a Schwinn Axum to build up an ebike since I knew I would toss the crank and bottom bracket and figured my parts bin was full enough to replace a bunch of stuff and weight wouldn’t matter.
I saw a video on the Royce Union RHT which looked amazingly decent for the price. I’d be considering it if I couldn’t find a decent used bike.

Complete waste of money either way. Both will be very Very slow on pavement. Neither one is reliable. Both have no-name components.
Neither one is considered a “real” bike. Walmart bikes are meant to be used a handful of times before they brake. You should be looking at used bikes so you can get a real name brand bike like a Trek, Cannondale, or Specialized.

Get a road bike or a hybrid for that.
