This clicking sound coming from my new Canyon Endurace CFR AXS. I have no idea what could be causing it. It only happens while pedaling, never when coasting.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Took apart, greased, and retorqued the bottom bracket
  • Removed, greased, and reinstalled the cassette

The sound started after a 60 km ride — it wasn’t there when the bike was new. In the video, I’m applying light pedal pressure. The noise can also be triggered by hand pressure on the crankarms.

It’s not brake-related — I’m only using the front brake in the video. The clicking happens on both sides when I push. I’ll add another video soon showing how it sounds during pedaling.

Get a piece of dowel rod like a wooden broom handle, preferably about 10mm round but thicker is ok. Get a friend to make the noise while you put the dowel against different parts of the bike with your ear on the other end. The louder the noise the closer to the source you are.

    Chainring bolts!!!

Take your chain set apart and grease the contacting surfaces and reassemble to torque.

This sounds exactly like how my bike did and now it’s fine.

    It’s not your bottom bracket.

Eliminate more possibilities: take the chain off. Then squeeze each crank arm against the chain stay with your hand. Does it still make the sound? If yes, then it is your bottom bracket–maybe the bearings aren’t aligned, but further diagnosis is required.

If not, then it could be in your pedals (doesn’t sound like it), chainring bolts, or somewhere further back in your drive train.

Is the pedal thread greased properly? If this sound always happens at the same phase of rotation, that could be a candidate. Even a small piece of debris / lack of grease in the thread can cause this under load. I had it with a brand new bike, and it was driving me nuts as i was thinking it was the BB.

  5. Sounds like the freehub — with the sound telegraphing through the spokes.

  6. Grease the inside of the rear dropouts. How many times I thought the creak was bottom bracket when it was the hanger or dropout rubbing. Not sure if that is the right term but where the wheel comes in contact with the frame

  7. Sounds like it’s just the free hub engaging…

(Bit of travel in the crank and then the click, the click always in the same position for the cranke with the amount of travel being variable, until you hit a new click point where it starts from the beginning. if this is accurate it is probably just the sound of the free hub. google how a free hub is built to better understand it, it is a bit hard to explain)
