    Good question. My guess would be to identify either the machinery that made it or the batch for quality control purposes. I could be way off though.

  2. It indicates the number or times you can reuse (open and close) the masterlink before it needs to be replaced.

  3. The important number on master links is the “12 S” – it’s a 12-speed chain (“12 speed” determines the width of the chain). With SRAM you also want to watch out for transmission (t-type) vs non-transmission chains & masterlinks. In your case, ideally just get the SRAM “powerlock” (quicklink/masterlink) for Eagle 12S. If you just want cheap spares, probably any other 12S quicklink will work too. There are some which are reusable (“Connex”), but they cost as much as multiple normal ones..
