Hey so my fiancé surprised me with a Ventum GS1 gravel bike for my birthday, and the shop is finishing it up as we speak.
My friends mostly ride road, and I ride a lot of road. I was planning on using this bike for road riding, cause from what i’ve read / heard. It’s completely capable of it.
However I am thinking that i’d like to switch to a 2x chainring over the current 1x. So I have more control over cadence on flats, and so I can rip into descents with power.

Currently It’s a SRAM Force AXS D1 XPLR 1×12 setup (40T chainring, 10-44T cassette). I’m imagining switching to a typical 2x setup (e.g., 46/33T chainrings with a 10-36T cassette)

I’m wondering if I should ask the shop to switch it, or if I should order the parts and do it myself. I don’t have extensive knowledge and am worried about fucking up wiring electronic shifting etc.

The shop has been helpful, but they have had the bike since March 10th and so I on one hand I feel like this should be a pretty minimal addition /change, but I am worried they will take a lot longer. Or that I am putting too much work on their shoulders.

Any advice is helpful.

  1. Thats a very nice present from her, is she available?

Honestly, 1x for roads is fine. I always found it fine anyway but then I use to ride fixed and my comfy cadence is like 100-110

Give it a whirl, maybe do some gravel riding. You may grow to love it before you convert to road.

If you did want to change to 2x for any reason, it shouldn’t be that hard. Quite simple especially as electronic with no internal routing etc. will be easy.

I would definitely get that fork cut first though more importantly.

  2. I wouldn’t worry about the electronic drivetrain. AXS is very easy to use and pairing a FD takes less than a minute, just pair with your phone in the AXS app. Don’t forget to change the cassette size in the app under RD as well.
