Hey everyone, I can't seem to stop my grips from slowly sliding down my bars. I've cleaned them very well with soap and water (their dirty right now but their usually clean) and let them dry completely before riding, but no matter what after about a week or 2, they always make their way down the bars. My question is does this happen because I mostly ride on dirt and do dirt jumps? Or is it just my junky grips?

I clean my bars and use a quick burst of wd-40 to slide the grips on. They stay on like champs.

Technically, wd-40 breaks down the rubber on a molecular level, but that’s never been a real world issue for me.

I’ve seen some stores carry “grip glue” but I’ve never tried it since wd-40 has always worked me.

EDIT: after using the wd-40 leave the bike alone for at least a couple hours to let the grips fully dry.

Clean your bars with rubbing alcohol or acetone and let dry, then use hairspray in your grips when you put them back on. Getting dirt under them will make them spin no matter what, though.

  3. I started using road bike wraps and I haven’t ever thought about going back on my BMX or MTB. A double wrap of bar tape is perfect.

Besides an air compressor, the best trick I’ve found through the years is just 4 zip ties. Stick four zip ties in your grip and then slide your grip on. Yank the zip ties out when you’re done. No drying time required.

You may also just need new grips if they keep sliding down like that.

I use spit to get my grips on. They don’t give until they are worn out. There usually isn’t my grip left by then anyways.

  6. Might be the grips. To much dirt and grime. If you use your bike a lot.. you’re grips go bad.

Wd40. Spray inside the grip then slide onto bars. The solvent melts a bit of the inside of the plastic and it adheres to your bars to the point where if you want to get them off you have to cut them off with a razor

quick way to do it mid ride is just roll the grips back and rub it down with your shirt, no dirt -> no slip

Clean them so there’s nothing on the bar or inside the grip. Use an air compressor to shoot air into the grip. It slightly expands it enough to slide it on in a couple short bursts of air. Mine have never slid or rotated. I use the same technique to rotate them around if a spot wears out more quickly. Just be smart with the compressor and don’t blast air into your hand..
