It’s day 1 of a bike tour from Maribor to the coast and further, ideally. It’s day one and i haven’t been careful with a previous viral infection and it is flaring up now. A cough came back and i feel tired and heavy heart after 30km of biking yesterday. We decided to stay one more day here (next to the lungs tree lol) and evaluate tomorrow.. At least the view is great and there is a chicken in the sleeping hay hut! 🙂

Anyone can share their thinking and desicion process for when this stuff happens? Should I just give up? It’s really sad to have the first bigger trip fail on the second day…

Personal health should always take priority, obviously. Does that mean you need to end the trip entirely? Maybe not. Rest if you must and take it easy until you’re fit.

  2. I don’t know if sleeping around hay and chickens will help your respiratory system. 😉

Well don’t give up on day 1. At least try for 2-3 days, easy of course, and then you’ll see. I’d try with some propolis spray for the throat, maybe some septolete.

How much time do you have? My wife and I just had to pause our trip for 2.5 weeks and had to take some transport to skip ahead because we both caught the flu. Shit happens, but we have plenty of time so it does not matter. If you have time: Check into a hotel, rest, then continue…

Well if your heart hurts, stop immediately! You’d better rest and recover now. Once you develop myocarditis, it’s not easy to get rid of long-term complications!

  5. Your body says “stop” – listen to your body, not to strangers on the Internet. (Yes, the irony of this sentence did not escape me, but still.)

First of all, I do hope that you will get well soon and will regain your strength to cycle again.
And it is not wrong to ask for tips or experience online.

I never had the problem of getting ill on tour.
I would decide on how far you are from home and how much time and money you have to recover.
Can you do the tour easily again in some weeks/months? Then go home (by bus or train maybe).

If you are far from home and have the time to regain strength (and maybe money for a hostel) then it may be better to stay there.

I would keep an eye on your feelings. If you’re not having a good feeling in your gut, it’s better to change plans.

I hope this helps. Good luck and save travels.

Sorry to hear that. Make the best of it, take it easy for a few days, look for easy low effort rides/walks in your current area which is beautiful, and just cut some next parts out of the ride (unless you hae time to make it longer). Take it easy, relax and enjoy.
