I would rent a proper MTB (maybe hardtail one day, full suspension another day) first, get it properly adjusted to your body, and experience both for a day – really helps you getting an initial idea – and don't let you get carried away with all the tech talk!
used is the way to go. many people buy expensive bikes, use them a few times then sell them. I just got a used mtn bike for $250. saved hundreds of dollars.

hardtail full suspension

In the bmx world you can basically say that a bike worth buying is about 500 bucks. Is there something you could say about a first hardtail?

Riding an undersized BMX down a sketchy mountain trail during a rainstorm is one of my favorite bike experiences of all time!
🤮
Lol buy walmart bike, save hundreds/ thousands then upgrade years later if still interested. Don't be the guy with a 2000 bike
I personally love hard tails cuz when I need to climb full suspension is heavy and light frame is expensive.😊
my head hurts.

Pls don’t get a gravel bike
