Just bought the partner her first road bike. Was doing some adjusting and noticed the cassette wobbling when I couldn't get the index down. Is this missing a spacer? It's a 10-speed cassette.

The bike is a 2020 trek madone alr 4 and Trek shows an 11-speed freehub, so a 1.85mm spacer?

  1. The entire cassette and lock ring are all moving so it’s not a cassette issue, it’s a freehub/axle issue. You need to have it adjusted so that the freehub is secured against the hubshell and the axle spins smoothly. If you don’t know how to do this, take it to your LBS.

  2. Hard to tell but it looks like the entire freehub is moving which is typical on some through axle rear wheels as the freehubs can just pop off for easy service when they aren’t in the frame.

  3. Yes. You need the 10 speed cassette spacer. It’s a 1.8mm spacer. If your cassette didn’t come with one, any local shop has thousands laying around.

Edit: looked again. Your whole freehub is moving laterally. Something is not fully seated.

  4. Can you push on the end cap and make it press on the axle better? Sometimes the end cap is the method of retaining the freehub body knowing that when riding, it’s sandwiched in the frame.

Does it do that when it’s in the bike and the thru axle is tightened?

The cassette is moving as one. I suspect the entire freehub is moving and this is possibly due to the end cap not being pushed on far enough.
