Hey everyone. I just bought this bike from a Thrift store. Maybe not the best place, but it was $90. 5 minutes into riding it, the pedal fell off. I'd like to fix it myself, but I'm not sure what all I need. What nut? Will I need a crank bolt wrench? I was trying to search my bike model online but I was finding mixed results and I don't want to order the wrong one.

(Pic 7/8) I also notice when I try to slide the pedal on, it seizes pretty quickly, even with some "persuasion." Will it pull in with the nut, or does it just sit that far off?

Thanks. 🙂

Can't return it btw lol

I think the best thing to do is take it to a mechanic to make sure everything is safe and in proper working order.

  2. Plenty of vids of how to replace a crankset, but dang. I agree – see a bike mechanic…

  3. welcome to “new crank arm” day- no amount of torque on the nut will hold it on as the taper is now destroyed.

But on the plus side, non-drive side arms are pretty cheap- take it with you a bike shop and they should be take care of this easily.

Your crank fell off. The pedal is still attached to the crank.

The crank interface (the square hole) is likely damaged. Even if you get a nut the crank is unlikely to stay on.

  5. The nut that’s supposed to be at the end of the bottom bracket is missing. I can’t remember the proper size, M8 or M6. Also needs a washer between the nut and the bottom bracket. You may be able to find the right nut and washer at Home Depot, or a bike shop.
The bottom bracket and the crank both appear okay. It the crank stays loose even with the new nut, then you may need a new crank arm.

  6. You’ll need a new BB and a new crank, those are fairly cheap. If you can afford to buy the tools and replace it yourself you should do it it’s easy and it’s worth it, look up yt tutoriais.
