Today while servicing the bottom bracket of my Specialized Tarmac SL8, after removing it, I noticed a line/marking on the inner wall of the bottom bracket shell. It doesn't look like a crack because it's raised/protruding, and the carbon fiber weave pattern is different on either side of it.

Is this normal for carbon fiber frames, especially in the bottom bracket area?" or "Should I be concerned about this?

  1. Watch a video on how carbon fiber bikes are made. If you don’t understand the process, it’s probably not fair to ask if something is wrong (life lesson there) on a high-end, relentlessly QCed bike from a very very reputable manufacturer.

  2. The top flap of carbon seems to be peeling up slightly. Honestly I wouldn’t worry about it because there is a lot of carbon in that spot but the next time you check it just take another picture to make sure it’s not worse. I’d say most carbon frames have spots like this on the inside where the layers overlap or where the layers are a little frayed from production process. I will say this looks a little messy and if you don’t like it I think specialized might work with you to replace it but it might be a long shot
