Crashed my bike on today’s gravel ride. Took both hands off the bars to rummage through my top tube bag just as I left tree coverage and a big gust of side wind blew through. Before I knew it I was on the ground. Not really looking for options on whether this is safe to ride. I’m going to replace for my safety. I’m just bummed that it happened. Please share stories about expensive things you broke on a ride by being stupid to make me feel better 🙂

I broke my skull once, is that expensive enough? I hit my head on the front of the helmet, the helmet absorbed it, cracked the foam from front to back, and I got a stress fracture just below where the helmet ended.
I went over the bars and broke a tooth. Ended up needing two years of Invisalign, three dental surgeries, and about $5000 of dental premiums not covered by insurance to repair.
When I worked for a mountain bike tour company, one of our bikes came back with the chain stuck between two of the chainrings. (These were the triple days.) I got it out, but it wedged back in there when I took it for a test ride. So I squeezed the rings together with a channel lock and went out for another test. The shop was on an alley and there was a gas station down the block straddling between the alley and the street. I rode down the alley, oblivious to the pickup that was parked with its bed across the alley, waiting for a pump.
One second, I was looking down at the chainrings, shifting up to the big ring and back down. The next second, I was standing in the alley, bike on the pavement, and my face really, REALLY hurt.
Two reconstructions and some donor cadaver cartilage later and I can breathe comfortably if the moon is full and all of the planets align.
I could be wrong but reading the previous three comments I believe the consensus (with which I agree) is toss the freakin fork …….
Seido fork… thankfully you can replace it fairly easily at a not too exorbitant price.
My Titanium collarbone drunk at a stop sign. If I hadn’t stopped, I probably wouldn’t have fallen over.
Reading all your comments makes me grateful that aside from some road rash I wasn’t more seriously hurt. Sucks that I have to replace the fork but I’m glad that’s the extent of the damage.
Nice story but we all know you tightened that bolt to 6Nm
Went ass over teakettle on the sidewalk when I was 7 and put my tooth through my lip. It got stuck and I had to pull it out. Also chipped the toof.
Was definitely goofing around. I’d like to say I’ve learned but it’d be a lie.
Went over my bars Saturday and broke my humerus mid shaft. Even with decent insurance I’m likely to hit my out of pocket max for the year. Luckily my bike seems okish, the bars might be bent and one of the shifter/brakes looks a little tweaked but no obvious wheel or frame damage. Helmet’s toast and new bib got cut off me but not having brain damage is a win.
Hey maybe that’s an excuse to go for a suspension fork
Once I was late for a dinner with this girl I have just met, I took the carbon road bike instead of the city one because of the speed. The bag I was carrying on my shoulder slipped and went inside the spokes, the wine bottle got stuck between the spoke and the fork, I was launched to a front flip and felt on my ass.
Arrived to her place with both bleeding knees and smelling like white wine.
We now live together, the bike got repaired after 10months 😅
Was an expensive dinner, but I’d say was worth it.
