I've had my fair share of spills, enduring some helmet strikes, dislocations, etc. This by far was the worst one from a pedal strike. Happened about 2 years ago. Adrenaline was high after the wound, I pedaled back to the trailhead, loaded up and drove myself (manual) to the E.R. Had me in a room in 10 minutes, doctor chucked a few staples in, sent me on my way. Ordered some shin guards and was back riding in a couple weeks once the staples were out.

What's yours?

  1. Oof that looks like a rough one, heal up op. Mine was 2 years ago, I was down in NC with a few of my homies for some pre (New England) season riding. There was a pretty decent sized trail gap at Kanuga on paint it black, should’ve been well within my skill level. Made the dumb decision to hit it blind, came in with good speed but at a horrible angle (I would’ve went straight into a tree to the left) realized this all too late and grabbed my brakes, not early enough to stop but enough to make me come up a good 5-6 feet short. Huge case, went flying otb landed on my back and continued to roll probally 40-50 feet till I evantually came to a stop. I broke my spine in 4 places and cracked multiple ribs. Could barely walk or function for a good 2 months before I started to recover. In all honesty it could’ve been so much worse and I was stupid lucky. Moral of the story, don’t hit high consequence features blind, even if you’re confident in your ability just at least look at the line.

The best part… you changed out of your mountain biking shoes, to your good pair of mountain biking shoes

    Damn man.

Honestly I would’ve posted my accident pictures if I had them (and if posting a torn open ballsack wouldn’t get me immediately banned)

That’ll change your shin landscape sorry for your experience I suppose thanks for sharing

  5. You’re smarter than a lot of us. I’ve had a few nasty pedal strikes and still can’t bring myself to wear the shin guards my mom got me.

Thanks for reminding me to get first aid stuff to keep in my pack/car when I go riding.

  7. That’s a tough one! I fucked my shoulder up to a point of needing imaging and never got it bc insurance here is fucking ridiculous. Its better these days but won’t ever be perfect

  8. Oh jeez, we started the would trend again!! I just started riding at 100% again!! 😂

  9. I have done similar – mine was 10 stitches. But the worst part was a reaction I had to the steri-strips they put in when I got the stitches taken out, the skin all blistered and it all opened up again. What a mess.

I moved to clipless for most of my riding afterwards. I have no problems at all with admitting that I did so due to a lack of talent and increased fear – it is a horrible injury.

Sorry this happened. Did you just leave your bike locked on your rack when you went to the hospital?

I’ve had some scrapes and small cuts from my pedals but nothing like that. Damn.

This is why I refuse to get really aggressive pedals. I’ve had no issues with plastic raceface pedals.

  13. That’s tough dude :/ especially right over your tats :/ show us when it heals. I have tats on my shin too and I always wondered how it would heal if I ever had a bad injury

Its not worth getting them stitched lol. By now, my scars basically all connect and run 2/3 the length of my right shin. It’s a cool scar, don’t ruin it by getting it stitched. Be ugly and gimp like the rest of us
