Just bought this frame and went to add the water bottle holder when I discovered these lines on the downtube. I bought this bike to use for Leadville MTB 100. Does the frame need to get repaired? How screwed am I?
They look like carbon fissures. If you don’t remove the paint from above it is difficult to know

This is why I don’t buy used carbon, I’d ship it out to a carbon repair company for an inspection

Can’t tell without sanding it down. Hopefully just the paint under the clear coat. Hope it works out. Cheers!

A specialist should be able to X-ray this for you and confirm

I am a carbon repair shop owner. This is 100% busted carbon. Paint does not crack like that without breaking carbon. It is fixable, I would give you an estimate of $450 to $850 for the carbon repair and another $200 for paint matching. The range in carbon repair is trying to estimate how large the damaged area actually is. Carbon delamination is always bigger than the visible damage.

Is it a brand new bike? Take it back to the shop, if it is, Specialized are pretty good with their warranties when it comes to things like that.
