Was it a huge headache working with insurance? I lost ~$10k worth of bikes back in November of last year and was basically offered lowball of the “like” according to an agent who had no clue on valuation and was trying to use it to their advantage. Unfortunately I have not settled this and am currently working through the situation with a lawyer as the offer would not even cover the like, which would leave me out of pocket.
I’m a grad student taking on debt and I really cannot afford to pitch out more for the like. I am pissed that someone stole my S-Works and even more pissed that we live in a society that welcomes theft openly without consequences.
I have hated life drastically without having the nice long rides outside and being stuck on a trainer doing Zwift as my alternative, especially with the weather having been so nice lately.
I guess it is what it is. Here’s a picture of my bike in case anyone is in the Bay Area by chance – stolen sometime around November 19th of 2024. S-Works SL6 and the frame was brand new with slightly used components on it.

I also lost a Giant Trance 2.2…dated back to 2016.
And for clarity this was theft…grand theft in San Jose, CA
I’ve had about… *counts* 5 stolen over the years. I always thought to myself “this should be enough”. And was wrong.
Now I keep my bikes in my house. Neither have been stolen.
Had two bikes stolen by my druggie friend that I foolishly let stay at my place while I was off bicycle touring. Insurance covered about 1/2 the cost.
That must hurt so badly. How did it get stolen so the rest of us can learn from you.
I had two bikes stolen. One was in my garage near the entrance and the garage door was open for an extended period. I live in a safe neighborhood so I was never cautious but shit can happen anywhere if you’re careless.
The second was when I was a noob at locking bikes and locked the fork to the rack thinking it was the same as the frame.
Never had a bike stolen outside of these two. Regularly locked $500-800 bikes in public places in Boston and Seattle for many years. Used various folding locks.
If you haven’t do you even bike 😂
Had our Giant Escape, kitted out with a rack and Ortlieb panniers, lights, fenders, frame bag full of tools, insulated water bottles, tumbler, rain jacket, in full commuter build plucked out of our backyard at the time, because the property management didn’t want it stored inside, and nothing to tie it down to almost a year ago. No insurance (money pit), and of course the police gave no fucks when making a report two hours after calling it in.
All monetary funds have gone into getting a replacement, and we’ve already has a set of lights, pump, and portieur bag stolen off it. At this point, we’re now to the point of GTFO of our living situation here.
I had a bike stolen with upgraded wheels on it. My homeowner’s insurance covered it all. I just needed to file the police report and give them documentation on the bike and wheel costs.
Yes.
But nothing really valuable so I’ve never needed to file a claim.
Still, I lock the bikes I value most up even when they are inside my garage on the unlikely chance I leave the door open. Before my wife and I got an apartment with a garage, my bikes were stored inside. Six of them. In a one bedroom.
I’m sorry.
How is this being handled with insurance? I work in a shop, and we work with insurance companies to replace bikes regularly. What do we have here, S-Works Tarmac with Ultegra, Zipp wheels, and a PM?
How much are they trying to give you? Are you expecting SL8 money?
And that’s why a cruiser skateboard is an option. Can’t have anything outside “locked”. Just when you think it’s safe…gone:(
I had one bike stolen by, I suspect an Amazon delivery driver. Complete with old school mag trainer. I suspect the Amazon driver because why else would they put the Amazon delivery box EXACTLY where the bike was… not just at the edge of the garage or on the porch like all the other drivers do.
Now, we’ve had it out, and the bike has been replaced, but this was 100% due to the wife leaving the garage door open thinking “ohh, he’ll be home in just a minute or 2” when in fact I wasn’t due in for 2 or 3 hours (I left the house before she got home for an evening work meeting), and it was early December, so tis the season and all that.
Probably everyone here. The question is more, “How many bikes have you had stolen?”
I once had a bike stolen. Left the garage opened by accident. I was sitting down in my office to do some work and the doorbell rang with someone wanting to do a “survey”, which I declined. While they had me occupied at the front door, their friends were in the garage stealing a mid-school BMX bike I had. I honestly didn’t notice it for a day then it all clicked. I felt like an idiot.
Fast forward 2 years. I was getting some gas and sure enough, I saw my bike in a rack on the side of the building. Called the police and they handled the rest and confiscated the bike and arrested the person in the gas station who rode in on it. Since it was worth more than $500 , that person was charged. I had to go into the Sheriff’s station with proof it was mine ( serial number and receipt ) they handed it over. Still in my possession till this day. I got lucky, but sometimes it happens when you least expect it.
