Shimano SPD. Look for shoes with “2 bolt” cleat compatibility. Likely marketed as mountain bike or gravel bike shoes.
You’ll need to get Shimano SPD cleats too. Not to be confused with SPD-SL which is the more road-oriented pedal system from Shimano.

It’s called a few different things, SPD, two bolt, mountain bike, etc. Any shoe that refers to one of those will work. Road is called three bolt or roadie cleats and will not work.

Shimano SPD’s. These are the mountain bike version which are a 2 bolt fixing cleat as apposed to SPD-SL which are a road bike version and use a 3 bolt fixing cleat

MTB SPDs. More float than the road version, but quite normal to see them on road bikes too.

SPDs. Local bike shop will hook you up.

Yes, these are clipless pedals and they accept SPD cleats. Since you probably didn’t get a baggie with cleats in them, you will need to buy a set in addition to the shoes. There are 2 kinds of SPD cleats: multi-release and single-release. Multi-release _may_ save you from falling over before the action of releasing is 2nd nature.
Road-specific shoes typically have very stiff soles without any outsole and walking in them ranges from goofy to dangerous. There are also Vans-like casual clipless shoes that have more-flexible soles, recess the cleat, have a normal street-pattern outsole, and walking in them can be pretty normal. It doesn’t make any sense to recommend a shoe without knowing which way you think you’re headed.

This is my standard pedal. Inexpensive and reliable. I have multiple pair in perfect working order that are over 10 years old.

Shimano mtb SPD pedals. You need shoes with a 2-bolt pattern on the sole.

Looking at the rear part of that pedal, I think it is pretty worn out? Maybe it’s just some surface corrosion that makes it look strange, but compare to a pic of a new M520 Shimano pedal.

I just bought these shows on Sat. I have the PD-M540 clip ins pedals, not sure if you have the 520 or not.
If you need to ask maybe you should buy some flat pedals and use shoes you already own. I’m not trying to be annoying but if you’ve never used clipless pedals there is a learning curve.

Shimano SPD M520s to be accurate. One of the best overall buys in cycling. MTB shoes would be best for these. Enjoy!

SPD. Or “Spuds”. The most widely used clipless system, with a relatively open license from Shimano.

Shimano makes adapters to allow SPD cleats to work on SPD-SL shoes. [https://ride.shimano.com/products/sm-sh41?srsltid=AfmBOoqeXdFZ864SWuo86ntQ0MHy3hnPiq49V1hOHOqGzpAzS4uLQ5iC](https://ride.shimano.com/products/sm-sh41?srsltid=AfmBOoqeXdFZ864SWuo86ntQ0MHy3hnPiq49V1hOHOqGzpAzS4uLQ5iC)
