Hello, i’m replacing the brake hoods of a Dia Compe 204 brake lever. But the reinstallation is giving me grief. The winged nut just keeps falling out of its recess. I have been finagling with this for over two hours but i just can’t figure out how to have the nut sit so that i can approach it with the screw inside the lever.

Anyone got experience with this?

  1. You’re going to have to remove it from the handlebars. It’ll be pretty easy then.

  2. Make a spring out of some folded cardboard and slip it under the nut. This will push the nut up so that the bolt threads can catch and then as you tighten it, the cardboard will crush down for clearance. Do check that the bolt threads are not munged, so you can be confident it will catch. I used to do this every once in a while when I worked in a bike shop; never had to re-wrap the bars.
