I got a new bike, and a new wall rack for it. Except, every time I hang it, the wheel tilts. Does this happen to anyone else?

I see photos online of mountain bikes with too-wide handlebars sitting this way, because they wouldn’t fit with the wheel straight, but my bike’s handlebars fit perfectly…the wheel just seems to want to hang this way. Does anyone else’s wheel tilt when you hang your bike horizontally?

  1. If you are talking about the front wheel my rack came with a strap to wrap around the wheel and frame

  2. The tiny bit of tendency toward OCD in me would be bothered by that too ;). When I had that style of bike rack, I used my velcro ankle straps and velcroed the wheels to the frame. Solved two problems at once

  3. Bicycles are self steering when tilted, this is that. Get some velcro to strap the frame and wheel straight together

Or try to make the bike level from the rear itll look like this: / try and shift it in the rack to make it straight with the wall so the rear wheel looks like this: |

  4. Only if I bump it. I use the Delta two-bike gravity stand (the U-shaped one, not the pole). Try to get the wheels level with each other.

Change the rack arm heights so that the bike is tilted forward a bit. You should still have an equal weight on each arm, just need to optimize the angle.

I think it’s physics, but I’m not sure , something about the front wheel weight and being at the end of the wheel base makes me think about leverage and gravity type things.

Everyone’s wheel tilts when their bike hangs this way. It’s physics. I have velcro straps that I use any time my bike is hanging (bike stand, wall mount, bike rack, etc) to keep the wheel from moving.

Rubber band around the front valve, loop it over the downtube and back around the valve. Allows movement if bumped but it will always settle straight.

  9. It always happens if you can see the bike. I just flopped onto the sofa and turned on the Dodgers game but I can see my OPEN gravel bike hanging on the wall up in our loft (my “shop”). Its fucking wheel is hanging to the right despite it being held perfectly vertically by the post. It’s even angled down a bit. It’s held by a Unior pro shop clamp that’s lag-bolted to a fucking steel I-beam that’s still perfectly level after 120-something years.

My road bike is hanging the same way but on the other side of the loftshop and I guarantee its wheel is straight as a damn arrow.

**reason**: It’s because of cable routing and maybe a universal constant. I wasn’t as careful/lucky when I trimmed the housing on the gravel bike as I was with the C64. It’s funny and cool that you asked. Now I’m going upstairs to switch those bikes around.
