  1. Yes. It’s a Trek, the dealer will replace it if the original owner can call the original dealer.

  2. This happens from water getting into the frame and then expanding while it freezes. Most often from storing the bike outside in a snowbank. Definitely dead.

  3. Doesn’t matter what kind of bike it is, or how hard it’s being ridden, a split like that is a dead bike if you value your collar bones and teeth.

    Strip the parts off of it, and transplant them onto a compatible frame. Might only be out $150-200 that way, instead of $1000+ to buy a whole new bike.

    um, refer to rule #4… if you ask if it’s broken, it’s not safe to ride.

    Edit: ignore all below. This crack is so extreme I overlooked the main damage not intuiting the damage on the non-drive side was the crack. Yikes. Do not ride this!

    /////// ignore! ///////

    in this case, I’d probably sand all the paint away in this area to confirm this is actually a crack. it’s possible this is just a split in the paint that just appears as a crack? this would be an odd place for a break in the frame, especially given how (you think) she rides.

    sand that paint off and look for a crack in the aluminum. If nothing, a respray in matte black should be pretty easy!

    Yes. Do not ride under ANY circumstances. Just don’t, if you value having teeth anyway.

  6. Any crack in a frame is catastrophic. Frames should not have any kinds of cracks in them. End of discussion.
