Years ago before invisiframe/ PPF was common, “helitape” was all that was available.
It’s a bit harder to manipulate and you won’t get the form-perfect fitment that modern ppf gives but it is very thick and hard wearing, I’ve had some on an old hardtail for about 15 years now.

I have the same stuff on my down tube, it’s a bit too thick and yellows after a while. I also use small bits of it where the cables rub on the frame of my other bike, works very well.
