I'm sharing this mostly for fun. Playing around with weight savings, I ordered a titanium hinge clamp off of AiEx. After it arrived I was surprised to discover that a Ti clamp turned out to weigh a noticeable amount MORE than the stock steal clamp. The weight in the item's description for the clamp claimed to be 48 to 48.5 grams. The stock clamp is 52.1g and the one I received is 58.6g.

I probably should have weighed the original clamp. It's doubtful I would have ordered this even if it was actually 48grams. Plus the price just went up yesterday!

Titanium alloys are half the weight of steel typically speaking, so it raises the question what’s that actually made of….

The original part is about a third steel, a third plastic, and a third aluminium. Aluminium is half the density of titan alloys, the plastic used is probably even less dense.

So Jah, no shit, Sherlock: a solid titan alloy replacement is heavier.

Here’s a weight saving tip: Take a dump before getting on your bike, saves you about two hundred grams. Smh
