Have fun mate! I did a stretch of most of Route 66 (from Marshfield, MO to Ash Fork, AZ) as part of my cross-country bike trip 2 years ago. Definitely got a feel for that small town America-ness you are looking for. I used Warmshowers along the way with some success and met some really great people too.
Some random recs: the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo is random but kind of cool, El Morro National Monument, Painted Desert National Park was pretty neat, take a Grand Canyon side trip if you can, Bearizona in Williams, AZ was pretty unique, in Winslow, AZ they have a random corner because in the song “Take It Easy” by the Eagles there’s a lyric that says “standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona”, in Flagstaff you can look out from the microscope which literally discovered the existence of Pluto, the Blue Whale is just a random whale in a pond in Catoosa OK.
