Background: I had ridden a mountain bike for the first time around 1989 or so on Kennesaw Mountain in GA on a hiking trail and a gravel road but had no idea what I was doing. Fast forward to 1992: I flew home from Atlanta to visit my family, and my brother (left side of picture) was going mountain biking, and I (right side of picture) said I wanted to go. He scrounged up a Mongoose Iboc for me to ride, and we met two friends at City Park in Austin. People newer to the city call it Emma Long, as that **is** the park’s official name.
I had no gear whatsoever and had a blast. I endoed on the first RH turn out of the parking lot after the three down ledges going clockwise, and a small juniier on the left cushioned my fall. I hopped up grinning and hooked. It did help that I was only out of the military just over a year and played competitive soccer, which helped me stay fit.
When I got back to Atlanta, I bought a 1992 Univega Alpina 5.0 for my first mountain bike. I haven’t stopped riding since, logging 314 miles and 14.8K of elevation in August in Austin. I love this sport!
