Anyone know why my brake suddenly starts sticking and not springing back once it’s all the way screwed in? I’ve cleaned the boss, lightly sanded to make sure there’s no flair, greased, etc.
Was that washer there originally? I blame the washer.

Make sure you’re actually pushing the brake caliper into one of the three holes on the frame before screwing it in and not next to them etc. Also check the condition of the spring on other side of ur brake caliper.

Use a drop of blue threadlocker inside the brake post. That way you don’t have to screw it in the all the way and you still get brake arm movement.

What’s the torque spec on cantilever brakes? I can’t think that these are being torqued too hard, but worth a double-check.

Don’t screw it in as tight as it can go. Make sure you are able to juggle the brake arm a little bit from front to back. If it still doesn’t spring back, you might need to bend the spring behind the brake arm a little bit. Stick a screwdriver diagonally between the brake arm and the seat stay, pull the spring towards the screwdriver so it bends in a curved shape.

It’s either the washer or something is stuck behind the brake arm assembly? Take that brake arm off and check for any unexpected / mismatched hardware.
If all looks good on the brake arm, I strongly suspect that washer. Its inner diameter shouldn’t be any bigger than the bolt since it’s supposed to bottom out on the post. Looks too big to my eye.

This happens if the spring adjustment screw is screwed in all the way. Due to excessive tension, the spring becomes warped and creates friction on the brake lever. Try loosening the screw.
