Hey all,
I just bought a used bike through BuyCycle, and on my very first ride, the Ultegra Di2 6870 rear derailleur completely snapped and got pulled into the wheel. It almost caused a serious crash, and I’m still pretty shaken.
Has anyone experienced something similar with this groupset? And does anyone have experience with how BuyCycle handles warranty or damage claims like this? I’ve contacted them, but I’m not sure what to expect.
I've added some pictures of the damage as well.
Appreciate any input!

derailleur hanger broke, relatively cheap replacement. I don’t think the groupset is the issue.

Looks like the derailleur hanger that snapped. You still see it bolted on.
A bike should be able to help locate a replacement. (Derailleur hanger)
As to why it snapped, there can be hundreds of reasons

Maybe the hanger wasn’t correctly mounted or snapped as other already said
This sort of thing is usually caused by improper setup, or more likely a bent derailleur hanger. It’s possible yours got bent in shipping and the first time you tried to get into the largest cog in your cassette the cage was pushed into the spoke and got ripped off. Check your derailleur, spokes and chain for damage too. You’ll need a new derailleur hanger (the piece that broke). There’s a million hangers out there so check with a local shop, or remove both broken pieces from your bike and derailleur and try to find a match on wheels manufacturing’s website.
No experience with BuyCycle. Hope they can help you out. If they’re cool they’ll do something for you, but the counter argument they could use is that it was checked by their mechanic and all was well when it went out the door. Something happened in shipping or once it was in your possession so they may not feel liable.
