FSA Chainring on some comet cranks. Ordered the lockring tool off ali, is there a trick to loosening this stupid thing or do you really just haul on it till it loosens?
Haul until it loosens. It’s tight and it’s soft aluminum. Extremely easy to cam off the locking and round the lock ring, even with the park version.
Definitely put the crank arm in a vice (or alternatively the socket, using the crank arm as the wrench) and use both hands for the lock ring. And make sure the Ali tool fits reasonably snuggly. Otherwise, probably best to pay for the park (which isn’t great, but these lock rings suck enough that you need everything going in your favor).
Broad-Conclusion2584 on
Don’t do it by hand, clamp it in a bench vice, and use a longer wrench, more force
Kruk01 on
Would probably add an old press of some sort that runs through the middle as well. Just to keep everything on order. Just leave it barely loose

Get yourself a [Pedro’s Vice Whip II](https://pedros.com/products/vise-whip-ii?srsltid=AfmBOorTPKtni4KrjblGM9lJf2ysW4CdZPM8hUMZZpGoHbxIoggqayUi) and use the front teeth.
Bench vise
Do it on the bikes or in whatever mechanical thing that can old it (probably a a vice)
Hands are deceptively soft and sensitive to pressure.
Anything tightly mechanically locked, can be removed by small mallet taps, or some stomping or whatever. The weak link is rarely made of metal
its 47nm so yeah it quite a few ugga dugas
