  1. Please tell me how to switch to 1 star up front in a budget way, because I’ve ridden it several times and mostly rode on the largest star, sometimes switching to the middle one, or what derailleur to look for on the used market, because the front derailleur frame has a lot of play and the stars are not in the best condition. Is it possible to replace the rear cassette drum with a larger number of stars?I plan to take it apart and lubricate it because the previous owner lubricated it with some old grease that is all dirty and black. I bought it very expensive, about $170.

  2. Great bike. An easy upgrade is to get a new chain and new shifter cables. Plus clean the rear cassette and derailleur and the front chain rings. Then try riding it and see how it feels. Swapping the drive train can be an expensive undertaking requiring some specific tools and skills. Go with the easy stuff first.

Muirwoods! I have this exact bike, but upgraded/replaced everything from the frame up (besides the bars). Yours looks like it’s in great shape, mine was very thrashed when I picked it up. I converted to a 1x drivetrain which i saw you were wondering about. The standard rear freehub body won’t accept anything wider than 7spd, so I wound up replacing the wheelset to get XT hubs front and rear. Did a 10 speed microshift cassette and derailleur, and a FSA 32t chainring with truvativ cranks (found a deal). Weird/less standard stuff on this frame is the 27mm seatpost – kinda hard to find, i shimmed a 26.8 – and 25.4mm inner fork diameter (if you wanted to adapt for ahead stem most common parts are 1-1 1/8). Otherwise it’s easy to work on and find parts for. Final fun fact, it has clearance for 2.4 inch holy rollers if you want a chunky tire.
