Owen takes a deeper look at the process that led to a British Grand Départ and what it means for British pro cycling and British grassroots cycling.

  1. Why indeed? less than 3% of people who previously subscribed to Discovery, have re subbed at the increased price, so no-one is going to watch, unlike when it came to Yorkshire

  2. It can't not be good for British cycling but the damage is unfortunately being done now. Perhaps it will be the start of another cycle, that's the least I hope for (oh and to stay away from the 'glitz and the glamour' of a London finish).

  3. Logistically I i don't know how the transfers will work for all of these places. You're looking at a 5 hour drive from Edinburgh to somewhere in Wales that is 200km north of Cardiff (thats assuming the second stage would be in Wales to accomodate the London finish). Its worse if you want it to start in somewhere like Newport and then finish in Cardiff you'd be looking at a 7 hour transfer.

Personally id love to see something like:

    1. Edinburgh/Glasgow (start and finish in either place)
    2. Somewhere in the Lakes or Yorkshire dales to Manchester
    3. Then a stage starting and finish in South Wales

  4. The tour coming to uk will make no difference to cycling in the uk. When a pro race was tried to be organised as in ride London and to be built up to a class 1 world tour race all that happened was people moaned about being ‘trapped in there house for a day’
The general public has very little interest in cycling or cycle racing in this country. The trend in recent years to hold long circuit races in remote parts of the country has hardly helped the sport. We should return to town centre cycle races of an hour duration . Noble though it is the pro racing cannot be used as a feeder to the continent. If people want to try their hand abroad. Do what the majority of other riders have done, save your money and get the ferry.
In the meantime let’s concentrate on closed circuit ( carparks, town centres , existing bespoke cycle circuits) riders can work in the week and easily be fit enough for an hour criterium. In the winter they can swap to cyclocross again an hour on closed circuit . Ignore the continent.
