So I’m trying to upgrade my 1×10 to 1×11 for climbing around my area.

I got the

SHIMANO Cs-M5100 Cassette 11 Speed, 11-51T

And the

Shimano Deore M5100 Rear derailleur

The derailleur looks dangerously close to the cassette in the smallest cog. It’s a few millimeters.

Do I need a longer chain ? Or a derailleur extender ? Or both ?

It’s also not shifting into the largest cog.

Thanks for the help.

  1. How did you calculate chain length? It looks too short. You don’t need an extender, 51t is compatible with that derailleur.

  2. Did you change your chain? It looks very, very short.

In the smallest cog the rear derailer cage should swing back close to horizontal. If it does not, then there’s no way the derailer will be able to go all the way up to 51. The chain just would not have the necessary length, and trying to force it will break things.

You can take a look at here for reference: [https://youtu.be/CmiMTg8qqsQ?si=KFjRj8yB78JWKERY&t=566](https://youtu.be/CmiMTg8qqsQ?si=KFjRj8yB78JWKERY&t=566)

I would add a longer chain first, and then see if the derailer still touches the cassette. I suspect it will be fine.

In addition to longer chain, notice silver screw in the 1st and third pics. Adjust it. It’ll move the default position of the derailleur closer or further from the cassette.

    Your derailleur hanger looks bent.

That will 100% sure cause the problems you describe.

Chain should be fine a couple of links short.
