  1. Tire is a Schwalbe Jumbo Jim, which I think is tubeless-ready, but I’m using tubes. The tube is obviously leaking, but how come air is coming out through the sidewalls? I cleaned the tire and inspected it inside-out, but it looks completely undamaged.

Regarding the leaking tube; the damaged spot looks weird, it’s like a gash that has started to tear. What could cause this? [Photos](https://imgur.com/a/pkwBDFQ)

If you’d had tubeless sealant in the tire it would seal the sidewall. Since you’re running tubes with no sealant the sidewalls are more permeable. Pictures aren’t loading for some reason right now so can’t help you with that bit unfortunately.

  3. The tire isn’t airtight, that’s ok. If you set it up tubeless the sealant would seal up the tire.

If you have a tube in there there’s nothing you can learn or fix while the tire is still on. Pull out the tube, find the leak, patch the tube and put it all back together again.

  4. Tubeless tires aren’t airtight without using sealant. You never noticed because you’re using a tube.

    Why would you do this?
Get the tube out, find the hole, patch it or replace the tube. Use your fingers around the tire to check if there is something sharp stuck in your tire somewhere that was the root of the puncture.

    Put the tube back in.
    Takes max 10 minutes.

Thats all you need to do.

Why would you soap the whole tire?

Air is coming out of the tube and escaping everywhere through the tire. Remove the tire first to see where the leak is in the tube. You need to remove it anyway to patch or replace it.
