Join me on a captivating mountain bike journey through the charming villages of Gozo, Malta, as we explore the island’s rich history, culture, and architecture. Our adventure begins in my hometown of Xaghra, cycling through Pjazza Vittorja, dominated by the impressive Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady. We navigate narrow alleys leading to Ta’ Kola Windmill, one of the few surviving windmills from the Knights’ period, constructed in 1725. Passing by the Church of Christ the Redeemer (Tan-Nazzarenu) and the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Ta’ Ħamet), we make our way towards Nadur.
In Nadur, we explore the Ta’ Kenuna area, offering panoramic views of the Maltese Channel (despite today’s poor visibility), and visit Pjazza San Pietru u San Pawl, home to the parish church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Our journey continues to Qala, stopping at Pjazza San Ġużepp and a belvedere on Triq iż-Żewwieqa, both offering stunning vistas of the Maltese Channel. A quick visit to Mġarr Harbour reveals the bustling gateway to Gozo, with its vibrant atmosphere and marina filled with yachts and fishing boats.
We then proceed to Għajnsielem’s Pjazza Independenza, featuring the majestic Lombard-Gothic parish church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. Cycling through the outskirts of Xewkija, we head towards Victoria (Rabat), Gozo’s capital. Here, we pass the Church of Our Lady of Pompei, traverse the lively St. Francis Square, and explore the narrow streets leading to Pjazza San Ġorġ, home to the magnificent St. George’s Basilica. Our tour of Victoria concludes at Pjazza Independenza (It-Tokk), bustling with open-air cafes and historical landmarks like the Banca Giuratale.
Returning to Xaghra, we visit the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, one of Gozo’s oldest churches, and explore the remnants of the Santa Verna Temple, a megalithic site. Our ride concludes at the Tal-Kortoll belvedere, offering a nostalgic view of the area where I grew up.
Experience the unique blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty that Gozo’s villages have to offer, all from the perspective of a mountain bike. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more cycling adventures around Gozo!.
