New to this whole thing, and I’ve been looking for a while. Nicest bike I’ve ever owned was when I was 10-15 my parents bought me a sweet trek, and then I bought a nice Fuji Carbon used that was awesome but never got into road bikes so I sold it.

Used bikes get scooped up so stinking fast. My budget is $500. I will be using it as mostly a campground bike, light offroad trails, and some paved road trails with a burley trailer.

I’ve been using a garbage ~$150 mountain bike but recently upgraded my wife’s bike as a gift to a Liv Rov DD and it is so dang nice to ride that I have got to upgrade mine. I originally wanted essentially the directly comparable male equivalent (giant) but I can see myself doing some of the bigger trails around here maybe 1-5 times a year with a friend who goes decently often.

Anyway, I know it’s not a hybrid, but the forks can lockout. Could this be a decent fit for me and price?

First off- that’s a marlin 5. You can tell by the front derailleur and the color. Second- that’s a decent deal. I’d try to talk the seller down a little bit, but you would be hard pressed to find a better beginner bike in that price bracket in what looks to be really good shape like that

  2. I wouldn’t buy it for $400. That looks like a marlin 6 gen 2. If you can see it in person and it doesn’t have any rust, and was well kept (ie stored indoors, no major crashes, no dents or deep scratches) see if you can get them down to $250- $300. Use the extra money to tune it and possibly add a dropper post.

  3. Don’t buy it. It’s not boost, or 148mm rear axle width. You’re buying an old standard, which is 135mm. You’ll have trouble upgrading the parts in the long run. The marlins are cheap bc they use a frame design /technology from 10+ years ago

I have to be honest with you I do not know what any of that means and I have no intention of needing to upgrade it. If I need a better more suitable bike for a different case use at some point I’d sell it and buy a different one.
