rebuilding a surly crosscheck that came with this vintage modular housing and I'm curious if it can be reused. The links come apart and can be slotted back onto the plastic tubing (pic 2) – is that intentional, and can I use that as a way of shortening/lengtheningh the housing? I really like the look of this stuff but don't want to use it if it's gonna be unsafe. Any information would be greatly appreciated, no one at my LBS could give any guidance

I think jagwire make something like that
Yeah, it is Nokon zero compression housing. I used to run it like 20 years ago.
Nope not unsafe, in fact it’s the heavier, longer lasting cousin of bike cable housing. Yes, you can cut it. Extending is a different story, but if you find out the brand you might be able to get a new plastic housing for it.
If it’s anything like the modern Jagwire variant (Elite Link), you can reuse it. And the segments are intended to be taken apart as a way of shortening the housing. Again, if it’s anything like the Jagwire variant, it’s safe and compressionless (and thus suitable for indexed shifting and mechanical disc braking). You should be able to use any cable liner inside those links that fits.
