In 1885, bikes were just becoming popular among the richer youths in the Netherlands. Not the ones we have today, but Penny-farthings, with the large front wheels. All the streets were either cobbled or unpaved, and the bikes did not have inflatable tires. So it was difficult for the people to find a good place to ride their new toys. 45 people petitioned the city council of Utrecht to build them a bike path, which the city then did. The path was constructed next to an existing sports field, named Maliebaan. It is still there in some fashion, although it is now generally used as a walkway, and the field is now a road.
Since the path is quite short, I continue through the Zeeheldenbuurt, in a street that was recently converted to a bike street.
