Finally got around to building a dreamy cloud to float around town and go basketpacking thanks to all the hot tips and inspiration from this group!

A few lessons from a first-timer (other opinions welcome):

  • Drivetrain really didn’t seem worth making a 1x due to the cost and the work for not really not that much of a bonus. I’d probs prefer the look and the simplicity but honestly couldn’t be assed as the 3x is good
  • bearings are easy to clean and regrease for a smooth ride but the back wheel was a bastard because I didn’t realise you have to take off the cassette (maybe good to keep in mind for doing if and when you change the drivetrain/cassette)
  • Thought the bike would be too small, but you have a bit of room to move when buying headset/stem and seatpost which are both cheap
  • bikeinn seemed good but actually just mostly used Amazon because bikeinn was out of stock and was taking forever — cheaper but eh not worth it imo (I’m in France where Amazon is also a bit shit)
  • was unsure about breaks but ended up replacing the cantis with v-brakes for 50€ and it was a game changer, would definitely recommend
  • Some basic tools are good to have, but honestly would recommend joining a bike co-op and using their tools. Turns it into a bit of a social thing too which was great along with access to odd tools and hot tips
  • tires, handlebars/headset, and brakes were all both the cheapest and the best bang for buck upgrades imo

Give us your thoughts on the build, and on the lessons and remember kids, ride your bike

    That’s xBiking, alright!
Just one last thing, take drive side photos for maximum appreciation.

Sweet ! Love to see MBKs, Peugeot etc getting some love. I agree that 1x conversion is not as much as a must as people make it out to be. If you’re used to it, itns as capable and the looser tolerances on the rear deraileur frol not having 10+ sprockets crammed in there make up for the slight added maintenance

Are these Reelight CIO magnetic lights ? How do you like them ? Sounds like a good compromise.

Can we get a parts list ? What brake set did you get, what pedals, etc
