As someone who lived off Ashland and Grand for many years and even though I had a car, I rode to work almost always… I will highly recommend a cyclocross bike vs a low spoke count roadie, all the potholes and jumping into grass to get around three blocks of traffic… also will be better in winter.

Avoid rim brake bikes. For that price you can get a decent used modern bike with disc brakes
