I’m trying to revive an old commuter, the triggers don’t shift the gears anymore. By the time I get new shifter cables and the 3×8 shifters/brakes at my LBS, I’m more than half way to a new drivetrain on EBay.
Should I replace the shifter cables in kind with the cheap 3×8 shifters and new cables from Amazon? Upgrade to mtb ones and separate brake levers? For $130 I could get a new full drivetrain from which might feel nice and revive an old bike.

Replacing the shifting/brake cable should make the bike feel almost like new.
Provided the drivetrain is intact, i.e. no skipping of gears.
Also, a few drops of oil in the right places and some maintenance can also work wonders.
The set for 130$ is not really an upgrade to the current setup.
In most cases the cassette, chain and crankset will need to be replaced if necessary.
Try cleaning the shifters first. They should be serviceable. If you get them to sort of work, change cables, chain and probably cassette. Try the cheap option first before replacing a whole groupset.
Will you be doing the work yourself?
